Because recessions are recognized when a wide array of economic factors, like falling GDP and high unemployment, converge, they are often officially recognized after the fact.
The body responsible for determining if the US is in a recession, the Business Cycle Dating Committee, loosely says a recession "involves a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months."
The Dating Committee is made up of eight members selected by the National Bureau of Economic Research and has no set selection criteria or term limits.
