As part of her sales strategy, Estée Lauder personally demonstrated her early products at hair salons, differentiating the brand from other luxury cosmetics competitors such as those helmed by Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden.
Lauder believed that actually touching her customers' faces to show them both how the product worked and how to use it was an essential part of her sales pitch.
Lauder also pioneered the "free gift with purchase" concept, which is now ubiquitous in cosmetic retail. These free samples often led to repeat visits and purchases, driving strong demand and high brand visibility.
