Biles Continues to Dominate. |
Superstar US gymnast Simone Biles won the all-around title at the World Gymnastics Championships yesterday, becoming the first woman to win four all-around world titles at the event. Despite it not being her best performance - Biles fell twice and stepped out on her floor routine - it was still the largest margin of victory in women's world championship history. She was also the driving force behind a dominant performance by the US women, who crushed the record for largest margin of victory by a team, beating Russia by 8.766 points. Biles turned in her winning performance despite being hospitalized for pain arising from kidney stones just prior to qualifying.

Synagogue Shooter Enters Plea. |
The man who allegedly killed 11 worshipers at a Pittsburgh-area synagogue entered a plea of not guilty in a federal courtroom yesterday. The suspect, 46-year-old Robert Bowers, faced a 44-count indictment handed down by a grand jury on Wednesday that included hate crime charges. Bowers was captured by police following a shootout at the city's Tree of Life synagogue in which four police officers were injured - Bowers reportedly told officers who apprehended him that he "just wanted to kill Jews". One of Bowers' public defenders characterized the plea as "typical" at this stage of the proceedings, and Bowers requested a jury trial, which could take three to four weeks. Funerals for the victims have continued throughout the week, with three more people being laid to rest yesterday. |

Mohammed Bin Salman. |
Despite being linked to the high-profile killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi earlier this month, the US and allies appear ready to stand by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The sentiments follow a reported call between White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and bin Salman in which the Crown Prince referred to Khashoggi as a dangerous Islamist who was affiliated with a terrorist organization. Analysts say the decisions reflect an acknowledgement that bin Salman could potentially rule Saudi Arabia for decades once his father relinquishes rule. The orchestrated murder of Khashoggi has reversed much of the image bin Salman had cultivated as a reformer, loosening restrictions on women and opening the country's first cinema in 35 years.
In related news, Indonesia protested the execution of a maid working in Saudi Arabia who was convicted of killing her employer - supporters say she was defending herself from being raped. |
