Gene therapy treats a disease by editing the disease's underlying DNA, replacing it with a functional variant.

Findings

Additional insights we found via American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy

  1. This modification is typically performed using viruses that act as delivery vehicles for the new DNA. Viruses are naturally skilled at entering cells, but in gene therapy, their disease-causing component is removed before delivery.

  2. Once the viruses have infiltrated a patient's cells, they can use the inserted genetic material to either produce more helpful proteins, fewer harmful ones, or create new proteins.
