This mind-bending optical illusion creates motion-induced blindness—stare at the middle dot and the others disappear.

The human brain has developed cognitive shortcuts to help us navigate in a world where our visual senses are constantly bombarded of information. But these shortcuts can also be exploited, tricking the brain into telling us something is happening when it really isn't. This short video unpacks the neuroscience behind some of the most common (but perplexing) optical illusions.

In this video podcast neuroscientist Andrew Huberman describes one way to help alleviate dizziness and motion sickness symptoms. He suggests visual anchoring—fixating your vision on a point several feet away and moving closer to it, if possible, or fixating your vision on your extended finger and slowly moving it toward your nose and away again.

There are many people who are astonished to discover that their complete lack of ability to picture visual imagery is different from the norm.

When you close your eyes, do you see static or colorful patterns or an "intrinsic grey" known as Eigengrau in German? This variation of our internal experiences is just the tip of the iceberg, one that scientists are increasingly studying and...

If you've ever spotted a face hidden in an inanimate object, you've engaged in a timeless phenomenon known as pareidolia. This three-minute video explains why and how it happens.

Both vertigo and motion sickness can be caused by mismatches between visual and auditory inputs. The brain relies on inputs from the eyes, inner ear, and receptors in muscles and joints to orient the body. When the eyes suggest movement but other signals suggest the body is stationary dizziness and nausea can occur.

Several companies are attempting to create brain-computer interfaces that skip over retinas and optic nerves to allow visual input to go straight to the brain, potentially restoring some sight to the blind. Clinical trial findings suggest restored sight is sparse and manifests differently than a sighted person might expect, appearing as specks of "light" clusters called phosphenes to help differentiate one's surroundings.

Humans aren't the best at remembering specific colors. In this game, players get to look at a color for a few seconds before it disappears. Then, they must pick out the exact color they saw. After submitting a pick, the results will show how close the guess was to the original color.

Take a fun look at the science explaining the odd experience of déjà vu, which some theories suggest is actually a sign of a healthy brain.

Move your mouse anywhere on the screen, and the site finds a photograph from its archive of a person pointing at that exact spot. It's a completely useless and delightful experience, and required a massive trove of tagged photos.

Humans perceive the sky as a flattened bowl and judge the size of an object by accounting for its perceived distance away from us. Combined, studies have found that the Moon on the horizon is perceived to be larger because the terrain makes it seem like it is farther away, similar to the Ponzo illusion.

This video shows a virtual reality environment view of what benign paroxysmal positional vertigo will look like, from a first-person view. It includes a virtual rendering of eye spinning associated with the condition. (Warning: Watching this may make some users feel a bit nauseous.)

Repeated visual cues like shapes or lines derive from the brain's innate compulsion to identify faces, places, bodies, and more. With repeated shapes, the brain seeks out resolution to the subtle variations between them. See examples in art and music.

As you stare into the distance while washing your home's seemingly never-ending pile of dishes, the brain activates its default mode network. This collection of "task-negative" brain regions associated with memory, reward, action consideration, and prediction alight with activity when humans mentally turn inward, possibly giving rise to the brain's ability to wander and humans' ability to construct internal narratives about the world.

Einstein's theory of general relativity—that mass literally bends space and time—can be difficult for the human brain to imagine. This interactive resource lets you create celestial objects, imagine their effect on space-time, and see how they interact with each other (best viewed on desktop).

This interactive project from MIT challenges users to distinguish between AI-generated images and real ones.

Artist Michal Levy has chromesthesia, a subtype of synesthesia in which sounds and music trigger involuntary associations with and sensations of color. This condition gives Levy a unique artistic perspective and ability to interact with and interpret music. In this short animation, Levy tries to capture her audiovisual experience of 'Giant Steps," considered a landmark composition in jazz history by musician John Coltrane.

Neuroscientists suggest the phenomenon is your brain recognizing that this feeling of familiarity is incorrect, showing off the brain's internal fact-checking system. Younger people experience déjà vu more often because their brains have higher excitatory activity and stronger memory monitoring systems.

This part of the eye—roughly the bullseye of the back of the eye—is responsible for processing the central vision of the eye. Degradation of the macula, formally called macular degeneration, leads to symptoms including blurred vision, the need for brighter lighting, and difficulty recognizing faces. The condition doesn't affect peripheral vision, but if you lose central vision, you can still be considered blind.

The phenomenon, known as the Doppler effect, is the result of experiencing an increase in the frequency of observed waves when approaching a source and a decrease when moving away. Because this property corresponds to color, approaching objects appear bluer than normal—blueshift—and receding objects appear redder than usual—redshift.

Invisibility is an oft-coveted superpower that many creatures throughout the animal kingdom have evolved to mimic through transparent camouflage. This article explores the science of this seemingly magical ability. The two critical ingredients in...

Humans are hardwired to make mental mistakes called cognitive biases, affecting the way we view our world. Among the most common are confirmation bias (seeking only evidence that affirms your views), authority bias (overweighting things said by authority figures), groupthink (assimilating ideas to avoid conflict), and more. This quick chart gives an overview of some of the most notable ways we mislead ourselves.

A growing number of people on social media claim to have a perceptual condition that lets them smell colors, see music, or taste sounds. But do they really?

Through diffraction, electromagnetic waves can bend around obstacles, as observed in the silver linings at the edges of clouds, where light should be blocked. Within reflecting telescopes, starlight diffracts around struts—beams holding a secondary mirror in place—and spreads perpendicular to them, creating pairs of spikes.

Faces and names don't always go together in some people's minds. While everyone forgets other peoples's names occasion, people diagnosed with prosopagnosia can't recognize faces, much less names. Even friends can family members can appear to be strangers. This article covers the diagnosis and issues attendant to prosopagnosia and its sufferers.

At that location, the warping of space-time is so severe that the entirety of an object's space-time motion is solely through space, leaving it immobile in the time dimension. Faraway observers looking at the object would see it appear frozen before slowly dimming and reddening.

It's a common technique among expert mathematicians, where thinkers rely on intuition, blurry perceptions and subconscious work—no writing, no formulas. The state is distinct from daydreaming, and often relies on sudden illuminations stemming from extended periods of subconscious reflection.

A doctor will look at a vertigo patient's rapid, uncontrollable eye movements—formally called nystagmus—to better understand its causes. When a patient is lying down with their head turned and their eyes spin in a certain position and stop it's likely a peripheral cause, but if the spinning doesn't stop or it changes direction it's more likely a central nervous system issue.

A post showing a dress sparked a heated social media divide, with some insisting it was white and gold and others insisting it was blue and black. The debate quickly spread to celebrities and brought in scientists to explain the optical illusion.

These touch memories are more complex and durable than previously thought. In research published in 2018, blindfolded volunteers touched over 150 household objects for about 10 seconds each, and afterward correctly identified the objects more than 90 percent of the time when presented with the object and a similar one. Participants still knew most of the objects a week later with about 85 percent accuracy.

Most people’s eyes become more sensitive to light in the winter months, but some do not. This failure to adjust causes ripple effects on those individuals’ biological clocks. This Ted-ED video provides a clear, brief, narrative explanation of the condition in six minutes.

Various geometric models, including Newton's color circle of hue and saturation and the horseshoe-shaped XYZ space for mixing colors via vector mathematics, have been proposed to describe colors accurately. However, these models do not encapsulate the variety of psychological effects that cause perceived colors to differ from mathematical representations.

These ripples were known to quickly replay neuronal sequences during sleep for consolidation. While awake, they help the brain prioritize memories to remember, and their disruption can impair memory formation.

A mind-bending, jargon-free account of the popular interpretation of quantum mechanics, helping to explain how something can be in two states at once.

When most of us picture a calendar year, we have a foggy image in our minds of the months, in rough, calendar-like grids. But for some folks, that picture is a whole lot more clear. Around 1 percent of the population has a strange ability known as "calendar synaesthesia," which means they're able to visualize in crisp detail an elaborate calendar of the months of the year. Learn how it works here.

Technology has advanced to where the seemingly separate fields of psychology and neuroscience are asking the same questions about dreams, such as whether they're more closely related to perception or visualization. Some field-intersecting findings include research that shows people with impaired face perception don't dream of faces, those with brain legion-related cognition difficulties deal with similar issues in dreams, and children's dreams change in parallel to their cognitive development.

Dizzy spells can completely upend the lives of those suddenly struggling to find their footing. Despite this severe impact, the different flavors of dizziness and their sources continue to elude medical understanding. This article follows a health...

Tasting words or seeing colors in music results from the brain retaining extrasensory connections from infancy. While most lose these neural pathways during development, about 4% of people are synesthetes, maintaining them without realizing it's unusual.

The "why did I come in here?" feeling after walking into a room comes from the brain creating event boundaries to organize memories. Mentally revisiting a previous room can help recall tasks and reverse memory loss.

Camouflage—nature's master game of hide-and-seek—is more complex than simply how things look. The disguising process required millions of years of evolution that have programmed how our brains take shortcuts. Watch this video to see examples of camouflage and understand how we process it.

While some animals are sensitive to many forms of light, humans possess receptors that are sensitive to red, green, and blue wavelengths. These receptors send signals to the brain, which are processed and mixed to produce the array of colors we observe, including magenta, pink, and "supercolors" that lack a corresponding natural wavelength in the visible spectrum.

In the 1950s, British cognitive scientist Colin Cherry started to explore how we could focus our hearing on one single source, even in a noisy environment. This video animation explains the phenomenon known as the cocktail effect and how selective hearing works. Discover how our brain is on the lookout for important or personally relevant information, even as we are occupied in other discussions.

This interactive teaches users to create quantum experiments through lessons resembling video game levels. Users can also use the virtual lab to visualize landmark quantum experiments like entanglement, teleportation, cryptography, and quantum computing, or create their own experiments with drag-and-drop elements.
