In a standard deck of 52 cards, shuffling produces one of approximately 8.07 × 10⁶⁷ potential card orders—a number about as large as the number of atoms in the Milky Way.

Findings

Additional insights we found via McGill University

  1. The set of possible orders of 52 cards equals 52!, or 52 × 51 × 50 × 49 ×..., which is about 8 followed by 67 zeroes.

  2. Because there are so many possible orders of cards for a shuffled standard deck of 52, every shuffled deck is unlikely to have ever been played in the history of the universe.

  3. There would only be roughly a 50% chance that a newly shuffled standard deck of 52 cards would produce an order previously seen in the universe if the cosmos had existed for a trillion years, and in those trillion years, there were a trillion galaxies with a trillion planets harboring a trillion people, each shuffling a trillion times per second.
