The Apple TV show, which premiered in 2020, did not increase American viewership of Major League Soccer or the Premier League, which were already slowly gaining ground in the US.
In fact, some soccer fans noted that the show misunderstood some aspects of the game, including the unlikelihood of a small-time American football coach suddenly taking over a Premier League team.
Critics note that the show's biggest gift to the sport has been its translation: Americans unfamiliar with the game's strategies and nuances are offered a window in, allowing them to then apply that to real-world games.
Apple TV and the MLS signed an exclusive broadcast deal in 2022, which some saw as a sign that the streamer was capitalizing on the show's big numbers and serving subscribers with more soccer, but that partnership has not been the rousing success that either side had hoped for: It will end ahead of schedule, in 2029.
