Additional insights we found via Crucible Moments

  1. College roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian founded Reddit in 2005. But months before that, they just so happened to ask Paul Graham out to dinner right before he started famed startup accelerator Y Combinator.

  2. While the cofounders initially had a different startup idea, Graham helped them develop the concept for Reddit that secured their place in the first YC batch.

  3. The name "Reddit" was meant to sound like "read it," as in "I read it on Reddit."

  4. While Condé Nast and Yahoo were both interested in acquiring Reddit in its early years, Condé Nast offered $10M before the social network had even begun to monetize.

  5. The Condé acquisition closed in October 2006, and Reddit's cofounders moved into the Wired office.

  6. However, five years later in 2011, Condé spun Reddit out into an independent company.

  7. In 2014, OpenAI founder and fellow YC alum Sam Altman led Reddit's Series B.
