In June 2026, EU food safety regulators approved sales of a GLP-1-inducing food additive, a change which may lead to 'supercharged' cereals and breads in Europe within a year. (Free w/email.)

Additional insights we found via New Scientist

  1. The European Food Safety Authority approved the supercharged fiber, called inulin-propionate ester, or ISE, after a randomized controlled trial reported that just 10 grams per day boosts GLP-1 levels in the blood and people taking ISE ate less and gained less weight than those who didn't.

  2. Fiber consumption normally triggers the release of appetite-suppressing hormones, but you typically would normally need to eat a lot of it to get the effects that are being emulated by GLP-1 weight-loss drugs—and this new food additive.

  3. The substance, ISE, is now approved for sales in the EU, and the scientists behind it are talking to companies about creating products with it including breads, cereals, and smoothies, but UK and US regulators have not yet approved the substance.
