Nicknamed SpudCell, the cell contains 36 genes—for comparison, humans have about 20,000—and was built from 150 to 200 simple molecules.
As part of broader synthetic biology research, the breakthrough may contribute to the future development of custom organisms, though SpudCell lacks systems for defense and proper waste removal and needs constant deliveries of food and ribosomes.
