A blind taste test in 1976 determined that California produced better wine than France, a decision known as 'the Judgment of Paris,' and realigned the wine world.

  1. For the first half of the 20th century, American wine was not considered among the world's best, and, considering that, the country did not produce much: In the 1940s, France produced around two billion gallons of wine per year, while the US made just 150 million.

  2. Patricia Gastaud-Gallagher, who worked in a Paris wine shop, organized a competition to help determine the best American wines to feature in the country's 1976 bicentennial celebration.

  3. The judges picked American cabernet and chardonnay as the victors, something that even surprised them, who asked for their notes back.

  4. The event was highly publicized by Time magazine in a May 31 article, which stated, “The unthinkable happened ... California defeated all Gaul.”

  5. Over the next two decades, California winemakers' revenues went from $150M to $2.5B.
