The book sold 10,000 copies in the US in its first week, and 300,000 by the end of the year.
It was also the first American novel to be translated into Chinese.
The novel was widely adapted for the stage, leading activist group the Daughters of the Confederacy to lobby the Kentucky state legislature to pass the uncle Tom's Cabin Law in 1906, which permitted censorship of productions—including adaptations of "Uncle Tom's Cabin"—that negatively portrayed racial history, arguing that such productions were dangerous for children and “unjust to the memories of their fathers.”
