Findings

Additional insights we found via University of Virginia

  1. The story originally appeared in the National Era, an abolitionist newspaper based in Washington, DC, between June 5, 1851, and April 1, 1852.

  2. Stowe initially thought the story would span only three or four installments, but the paper's editor offered her complete freedom to publish as much as she pleased, which she took advantage of: The story eventually ran for 41 installments across 44 weeks.

  3. It's estimated that at least 50,000 people read it in this form before it was eventually published as a proper book, including some editorial and narrative changes made by Stowe, on March 18, 1852.
