  1. The Universal Press Syndicate wanted to use the popular characters for toys, clothing, and TV shows, but creator Bill Watterson flatly refused, saying, “Calvin and Hobbes was designed to be a comic strip and that’s all I want it to be. It’s the one place where everything works the way I intend it to.”

  2. For six years in the '90s, Watterson railed against the requests of the Universal Press Syndicate, with the distributor eventually accepting Watterson's refusals.

  3. In 1995, Watterson ended the comic strip with a letter to the thousands of newspapers that ran it, writing that he was "eager to work at a more thoughtful pace, with fewer artistic compromises."
