In the 1970s, King began releasing books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, a ploy that allowed him to write outside the horror genre without attracting the displeasure of his massive fan base.
The name also allowed him to publish multiple books in the same year without oversaturating the market for "Stephen King" books.
In 1985, a bookstore clerk recognized King's voice in the Bachman novel "Thinner" and wrote to King's editor saying as much; King called the clerk's bookstore and told him, "You know I’m Bachman, I know I’m Bachman, what are we going to do about it?"
In 1985, King admitted to the Bangor Daily News that he was behind the Bachman books.
