Gravitational waves—ripples in the fabric of spacetime—are detected at LIGO by measuring how two lasers traveling down equally distant, perpendicular tunnels interfere with one another after they reflect back and meet.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Veritasium

  1. In each of the two detectors that make up the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, a continuous laser beam is split at the point where two tunnels meet, with each beam fragment traveling 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) before bouncing back and interfering with the other.

  2. Within LIGO, passing gravitational waves alter the shape of space—lengthening one tunnel and shrinking the other—and how long it takes laser beams to travel down each before they interfere and produce a pattern associated with specific astronomical phenomena.

  3. LIGO's sensitivity is equivalent to detecting that the length of a ruler 4.37 light-years (25 trillion miles) long has changed by the width of a human hair.
