The Pius XI Medal—named after the pope who reestablished the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1936—has been awarded every two years to a promising scientist under 45.

Findings

Additional insights we found via The University of St Andrews

  1. The Academy of Lynxes, which dissolved after the death of its cofounder, was recreated by Pope Pius IX in 1847 as the Pontifical Academy of the New Lynxes, before being rebranded by Pope Pius XI.

  2. According to Pope Pius XI, the Academy was founded "to promote the progress of the mathematical, physical and natural sciences and the study of epistemological problems relating thereto."

  3. Among the recipients of the Medal were Stephen Hawking for their work on black holes, Adi Shamir for their co-invention of RSA encryption, and Demis Hassabis, the CEO and cofounder of Google DeepMind.
