While constructing the tunnel connecting the UK and France, satellite positioning systems were supplemented by paleontologists on either side of the tunnel, who analyzed fossils to ensure excavation was at the correct depth.

Construction of the Channel Tunnel was made possible by the discovery of a layer of chalk marl beneath the seabed, which was soft enough to bore through yet structurally sound.
Because certain organisms lived and died during distinct historical periods that correspond to the formation of specific rock layers, examining microfossils in the rock debris helped keep Channel Tunnel excavations within the appropriate layer.
Excavations of the Channel Tunnel began in 1988 in what would eventually span over 150 kilometers (93 miles) across three tunnels, crossover chambers, emergency passages, and air ducts.
For Channel Tunnel excavations, waterproof boring machines were developed that could drill 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) per hour, and coordinates were constantly checked during operation to ensure the teams on either side of the tunnel met within 2 centimeters (0.79 inches) of each other.
