  1. An international team of researchers studied 20 fossils from nine cricket species found in Inner Mongolia, China, and constructed models of their wing vibrations, which were validated by comparing model predictions with those for living species.

  2. The results suggest ancient bush crickets, or katydids, would have produced calls that resembled pure tones—sounds of a single frequency—like those heard in electronic beeps or whistles, but repeated over many chirps, rather than buzzes or hisses.

  3. The high-pitched notes of ancient insects would have allowed them to communicate in noisy environments, but just as determining which smoke detector in a home is going off can be challenging, the pure tones would have prevented predators from easily locating them.

  4. Researchers believe some katydids engaged in ultrasonic communication during the middle Jurassic Period, which would be the oldest known record of such animal communication.
