Scientists are using CRISPR to genetically modify felines so they don't trigger allergies in humans.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Museum of Science

  1. Around 10% to 20% of people are allergic to cats, typically because the body incorrectly labels the Fel d 1 protein in cats' saliva and oil glands (which rub onto fur and their surroundings) as a threat that the human immune system must respond to in order to keep safe.

  2. In early-stage research, scientists have been using this molecular scissor approach to snip the gene responsible for encoding that protein, reducing the overall amount of this allergy-triggering protein and effectively making more hypoallergenic cats.

  3. Scientists remain unclear about the role of the Fel d 1 protein for feline health or function, but so far, there is no known complication from suppressing it to make felines more allergy-friendly.
