Invisible to direct observation, scientists determined the object at the center of the Milky Way—Sagittarius A*—was a supermassive black hole based on the orbits of fast-moving stars in the area.

Located about 26,000 light-years from Earth, Sagittarius A* is more than 4 million times the mass of the sun, but its diameter is only about 16 times as large, resulting in a density consistent with a supermassive black hole.
In the 1970s, before Sagittarius A* was identified as a supermassive black hole, it was observed emitting radio waves, which were later attributed to superheated material orbiting in a disk around the celestial object.
The stars that orbit in the extreme environment near Sagittarius A* have been used to validate general relativity—Albert Einstein's theory of gravity.
