The driving concept is that if a resource becomes easier or cheaper to use, it’s more likely to be widely adopted, ultimately increasing its use.
One of the most famous examples of the paradox is coal. As coal became more efficient to use, meaning less coal was used per activity, more coal was used overall because it became the cheapest source of energy.
The paradox was observed by William Stanley Jevons in his 1865 book, “The Coal Question: An Inquiry Concerning the Progress of the Nation, and the Probable Exhaustion of Our Coal-Mines.”
The concept has entered the public consciousness as a framework for understanding how advancements in artificial intelligence might lead to widespread adoption of the technology.
