After the COVID-19 pandemic, Amsterdam became the first city to apply 'doughnut economics,' a new economic school of thought that defines productivity in terms of environmental impact.

Findings

Additional insights we found via PBS

  1. Doughnut economics stratifies human needs and the earth’s resources to evaluate how a country’s economic activity impacts basic needs and the environment.

  2. The sweet spot, which looks like a doughnut on economist Kate Raworth’s proposed chart, represents the ideal balance between meeting the needs of everyone in society without exploiting the environment.

  3. Doughnut economics rejects traditional growth metrics, like gross domestic product, in favor of sustainability and social standards (think: literacy rates, health access, and water access).

  4. Amsterdam’s embrace of doughnut economics, though, primarily serves as a framework for public policy decisions to be more grounded in sustainable development goals.
