The first federal minimum wage wasn't set until 1938, when it was 25 cents per hour.

Findings

Additional insights we found via PBS

  1. In the US, the “minimum wage” is the smallest amount a business can pay an employee per hour by federal law.

  2. The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 since 2009.

  3. When a state has a different minimum wage than the federal one, all employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (which is most workers) will earn the higher of those two rates.

  4. As of 2021, nearly 1.6 million Americans made the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
