  1. Hock, who grew up extremely poor in rural Utah without indoor plumbing and had a distaste for institutions and conformity, was an unlikely candidate for the founder of one of the most successful banking organizations of all time.

  2. While he started working at age 10, taking on many summer and after-school jobs in agriculture, Hock secured his first job in finance after college at a “small, floundering branch office of a consumer finance company.”

  3. He lost that job at age 25 with enough money left for a month's groceries, but no savings and considerable debt. He also had a pregnant wife and two young children to support, but Hock couldn't bring himself to file for unemployment.

  4. He eventually got a job at a small investment company with corrupt management before joining the National Bank of Commerce, one of the first franchisees of BankAmericard.

  5. Bank of America launched a network to facilitate credit card transactions after its famous 1958 "Fresno Drop," a stunt the bank pulled to distribute the first credit cards—and it soon needed to license the network to other banks so they could participate in the growing national credit card system.

  6. While working at the National Bank of Commerce in Seattle, Hock was tapped to organize the increasingly chaotic system.

  7. By 1976, Hock had given the network the name "Visa" and had become Visa USA's first CEO.
