Mount Everest may be considered the tallest mountain on Earth, but the summit of Ecuador's Mount Chimborazo is more than a mile further away from Earth's center than the top of Everest.

Additional insights we found via NOAA
Located in Nepal and Tibet, Mount Everest rises to 8,848 meters above sea level, but, because Earth is not a perfect sphere and bulges at the equator, Mount Chimborazo is over 2,072 meters farther from Earth's center than Everest.
From base to peak, Everest is not the tallest mountain on Earth, since Hawai'i's Mauna Kea stretches to more than 10,210 meters, though more than half of it is underwater.
