The America250 commission yesterday revealed the contents of a 900-pound time capsule due to be buried in Philadelphia on July 4 and dug up 250 years later.
All 50 states, five territories, three branches of government, and Washington, DC, contributed a keepsake commemorating life in 2026. California offered an AI prediction of what the state would be like in 2276, Georgia donated a painting of the Masters logo, and Maine submitted a bone from an endangered whale. Federal scientists and preservationists sealed the contents last week after spending years designing the capsule to survive 10 feet underground for two and a half centuries. Experts say Philadelphia would have to be 6 feet underwater for the contents to get wet.

A fire erupted yesterday at the main cathedral in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of Ukraine’s most well-known cultural and religious destinations. See the historic monastery complex on fire here (via YouTube).
The fire erupted beneath the main cathedral's towers and golden domes after Ukraine said Russia launched 70 missiles and more than 600 drones into the country, including a drone it says was found in the wreckage. The complex was founded around 1050 by Saint Anthony, a Christian monk who sought a place for prayer and retreat. It contains a vast underground network of caves that he and other monks once navigated; today, the labyrinth houses tombs of the monks, including Saint Anthony. A 47-year-old father with ALS has used a brain implant to communicate with roughly 92% accuracy for nearly two years, the longest-running demonstration of speech communication through a brain-computer interface.
The at-home system, described in a study released yesterday, converts brain signals into near-instant speech, letting Casey Harrell communicate independently and conversationally. Four implants, each packed with 64 tiny electrodes, record activity from the brain's speech-control region. When Harrell tries to speak, AI decodes the signals into text and a synthetic voice modeled on recordings of his pre-ALS voice. The translation happens at about 56 words per minute.
Harrell had surgery in 2023; the study reports on the first 23 months following the procedure. Over time, the device has evolved into more than a speech tool, allowing Harrell to operate a computer, surf the web, send texts and emails, and enable a profanity filter when talking to his young daughter.
