Oscars Set for Sunday. |
The major awards season comes to a close this weekend with the 91st annual Academy Awards on Sunday night live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The major storyline is who isn't present to present - it will be the first hostless Oscars since 1989 after Kevin Hart dropped out following backlash over homophobic tweets from 2010. Producers have reportedly assembled a lineup of celebrities to move the show along, including Barbra Streisand, Serena Williams, and others. As for the actual awards, this season is one of the least certain in recent memory - the wide-open race may allow Black Panther to become the first superhero flick to win Best Picture, unless Netflix can snag its first Best Picture with the critically acclaimed Roma. Get a full rundown of the nomination slate, along with predictions, here.

Redo in North Carolina. |
Officials in North Carolina ordered a new race for the state's 9th Congressional District yesterday, the last contested US House seat from the 2018 midterms. The announcement followed mounting evidence that the campaign of Rep. Mark Harris (R), who led the original ballot count by 905 votes but was never certified as the winner, committed election fraud. According to reports, a political operative associated with the Harris campaign was accused of tampering with absentee ballots - officials took notice when 61% of mail-in ballots from North Carolina's Bladen County came in for Harris, despite just 19% of them belonging to registered Republicans. The dates for the new race will be determined by the state's election board in the coming weeks. |

Smollett Appears in Court. |
Actor Jussie Smollett made his first appearance in court after being arrested for filing a false police report. The saga began nearly a month ago, when the Empire actor claimed to have been attacked by two men yelling racist and homophobic slurs while representing themselves as supporters of President Trump. The case began to unravel after one of two men questioned in the incident was revealed to be a former personal trainer of Smollett, claiming the actor paid the pair $3,500 to stage the attack. Police said that the actor, who posted $100,000 bail, was trying to gin up publicity because he was unhappy with his salary on the show. Smollett returned to the Empire set yesterday, though his future with the show is in doubt.
