Coast Guard Officer Arrested for Terror Plot. |
A Coast Guard lieutenant was arrested last week on gun and drug charges related to what prosecutors say was a larger domestic terrorism plot, according to court filings revealed yesterday. 49-year-old Christopher Hasson, an avowed white nationalist, had allegedly compiled a hit list of prominent journalists and Democratic politicians. Prosecutors also presented emails from Hasson where he discussed conducting a biological attack on the US. Federal agents reportedly found 15 firearms and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition when they raided Hasson's residence - as well as dozens of bottles of human growth hormone (read court files). Hasson served in the Marines from 1988 to 1993, and more recently had served as an acquisition officer at the US Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, since 2016.
"I am dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth," Hasson wrote in a letter drafted to friends in 2017. |

Church Sex Abuse Summit. |
Pope Francis kicked off a four-day summit at the Vatican today, inviting nearly 200 church leaders to join lectures and workshops aimed at addressing widespread sexual abuse by clergy. The conference comes at the end of a rough month for the Church - Francis defrocked former cardinal Theodore McCarrick for longstanding sexual abuse, a bombshell report detailing sexual violence against nuns was released, and officials confirmed the existence of secret guidelines for clergy who violate celibacy vows and father children. The Church also buffered an avalanche of high-profile scandals that came to light in 2018, in dioceses in the US, Chile, Australia, and elsewhere. Francis himself has tempered expectations, aiming to provide hands-on instructions for local officials on how to handle abuse claims. |

Cohen to Testify Next Week. |
Former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen will testify in an open-door hearing before the House Oversight Committee on February 27th. The public testimony will be followed by a closed-door appearance before the House Intelligence Committee. Cohen was sentenced to three years after pleading guilty to eight separate charges, including a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels that was considered an excessive campaign contribution. The news of the testimony came hours after a judge granted Cohen a two-month delay in reporting to prison while Cohen reportedly recovers from shoulder surgery. Cohen will now report on May 6th.
Editor's Note: Yesterday we mistakenly said that police had video of the attack on Empire actor Jussie Smollett. In fact, surveillance footage shows two men police questioned about the attack, but not the attack itself. |
