Nikki Haley to Resign. |
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced yesterday that she will resign from her post at the end of the year. Haley was one of the earliest members of President Trump's administration, accepting the nomination to the UN in November 2016 and officially beginning duties in January 2017. As the chief envoy to the UN, Haley managed US relations through crises like the 2017 Syrian chemical attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun, and pushed its members to do more to confront Iranian aggression in the Middle East. As the first-ever female governor of South Carolina - and only the second Indian-American governor in US history - many assume Haley will seek higher office. In the meantime she simply said she wanted to "take a break" from public service and waived off rumors of a 2020 presidential bid. |

Hurricane Michael. |
Hurricane Michael strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane overnight, exceeding projections and bringing 130 mph winds to the Florida panhandle this morning. The storm is set to make landfall around 8am almost directly over Panama City (see path), and could dump almost a foot of water as it moves northeast over Florida over the next two days. Officials are particularly concerned about storm surge - or the height that the water level rises above average - which they say could reach up 13 feet in some places. Over 375,000 people were under evacuation orders as of Wednesday morning, and the storm is on track to tie Hurricane Eloise (1975) as the strongest to hit the panhandle on record. One unlucky cruise ship sailed through the system while on the open ocean (w/ video).
In related news, a new law will require audits of failed federal contracts given out during hurricane recovery. |

Saudi Journalist Killed. |
Turkey has accused Saudi Arabia of orchestrating the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last week. Officials say Khashoggi, a well-known journalist and Washington Post columnist critical of the Saudi government, was last seen entering the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2nd. Turkey says it has concrete evidence he was murdered in the consulate - with some of the more gruesome theories saying he was dismembered - while Saudi officials say Khashoggi left out of the back door. Turkish officials received permission to search the consulate yesterday, but reports suggest security footage from the building had been removed prior to the search. The case has strained Turkish-Saudi relations and also impacts Saudi ties with Washington, as Khashoggi was in self-imposed exile in Washington DC due to threats on his life.
Over 1,800 journalists have been killed in the line of work since 1992. |
