As the Earth revolves around the sun, it crosses paths with the orbits of asteroids and comets, and these orbits include material shed by comets and asteroids—meteoroids—which are mostly smaller than grains of sand.
When Earth moves through clouds of meteoroids, these high-speed objects burn in the atmosphere due to friction, with some illuminating brightly enough to create streaks of light in the sky, called meteor showers
Because of the consistent orbits of Earth, comets, and asteroids, the peak viewing times of meteor showers can be predicted in advance, such as the Perseids in August and the Lyrids in April.
