Additional insights we found via Great Big Story

  1. The brewery is located in the Arctic village of Longyearbyen—in a region known for polar bears, reindeer, and miles of uninhabited frozen tundra.

  2. Svalbard caters to a diverse, international clientele who appreciate the beer's unique ingredient: 2,000-year-old glacier water.

  3. In the early 1900s, miners in Svalbard had a habit of showing up to work drunk, leading to a limit on the amount of beer residents were permitted to purchase, so, in response, miners began brewing their own beer, which prompted a law banning brewing.

  4. In 2015, the law was changed, and Svalbard Brewery opened soon after, making it the first brewery in the Arctic.
