Patient portals offer a good opportunity to track your healthcare records and communicate with doctors, but they also allow patients to see test results without context, which can cause unnecessary concern.

  1. The records automatically ping the patient when new results or messages are in, but test results may be posted without a doctor's review or context, which can cause people to misinterpret what they're seeing. This article suggests contacting your doctor a day or two after receiving results if you haven't heard from them.

  2. Patient portals are particularly useful for making appointments, updating medication lists, tracking upcoming vaccine or test requirements, sharing medical notes with others who have access to the portal, including caregivers, and communicating directly with your doctor.
