Statins target the "bad" form of cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein), which can cause dangerous blockages in the body. The US FDA first approved a commercial statin for use in 1987.
The human body makes most of its cholesterol at night, so some statins are prescribed for evening use.
Statins are sometimes prescribed for people at risk of a heart attack or stroke, even if their cholesterol level isn't concerning.
In one study comparing 135,000 people at risk of heart attack and strokes, individuals who took statins had about a 25% reduced risk of those medical emergencies as compared to people who didn't take them.
