In 1816, Shelley vacationed in Switzerland with her future husband, Percy Shelley, and a handful of others, including Byron, but the weather was bad and the group spent most of the trip indoors.
After spending several days discussing their favorite Gothic and horror stories, Byron challenged the group to write their own, trying to outdo the fine examples they'd cited.
Shelley's response to Byron's challenge came to her on one of the subsequent nights: “I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion,” she wrote in an 1831 preface to "Frankenstein."
