Sarah Howe collected $500K—equivalent to about $13M today—primarily from single and elderly women who were overlooked by traditional banks through the “Ladies’ Deposit Company.”
After standing trial, Howe was only convicted of soliciting money through false pretenses, as she had falsely claimed the bank was being supported by a Quaker venture.
Howe was caught in a similar scheme again after she got out of jail, but then returned to her original career as a fortune teller.
