In 2024, as part of Project Panana, Anthropic cut the bindings from millions of dollars' worth of purchased books to rapidly scan them at low cost and collect text data for its large language models, which power tools like Claude.
Despite hiring the former head of partnerships for the Google Books project, which scanned millions of books from libraries without damaging them before returning them, Anthropic's Project Panama resulted in the discarding of millions of damaged books.
