As of 2026, the rarest mineral on Earth may be kyawthuite, an orange gemstone whose only known specimen was found in Myanmar in 2010.

  1. Named after Kyaw Thu, the Burmese meteorologist who purchased the stone from a miner, kyawthuite is a bismuth-antimony oxide thought to have formed at high temperatures in an environment that also exposed it to tantalum and trace amounts of titanium, niobium, tungsten, and uranium.

  2. The only sample of kyawthuite—a 1.61-carat gemstone—is housed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
