At private colleges, the average student pays about a third of the advertised price per year. At public universities, it's less than half.
While a college or university might advertise a price of $90K per year, college tuition works more like a flight where every passenger pays a different fare.
The financial aid options that help bring the cost of college down for most students include Pell Grants, state-level tuition support programs, and institutional aid from the colleges themselves.
Over 80% of undergrads at private, nonprofit colleges receive some form of institutional aid.
Less than a quarter of students at private colleges pay the full sticker price.
