Need To Know

Drone Strike in Jordan

At least three US troops were killed, and at least 25 other US personnel were wounded, after a drone strike hit a remote military post in northeast Jordan yesterday. Officials said the attack, the first in the Middle East to kill American forces since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, was carried out by unspecified Iran-backed militias.

The strike occurred near al-Tanf, a base sitting a few miles from the Jordan-Syria-Iraq meeting point and lying along the Baghdad-Damascus highway (see overview). The base anchors a localized zone outside of Syrian government control, and has served as a launch point for coalition operations against ISIS in the region in recent years.

In related news, negotiators are said to be closing in on a deal that would see a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip for up to two months in exchange for the release of more than 100 Hamas-held hostages. The majority of those released would be women, the elderly, and those needing medical care—an agreement to return the remaining hostages would be worked on within the first 30 days of the pause in fighting.

Separately, the Biden administration is said to be considering slowing military aid to Israel in an effort to push the government to seek an end to the conflict.

Chiefs vs. Niners

The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII after both teams won their respective conference championship games yesterday.

The Chiefs will be making their fourth trip to the title game in five years after beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road, 17-10. Tight end Travis Kelce caught all 11 passes thrown his way, including a touchdown, en route to breaking Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice's record for all-time playoff receptions (151). The game turned on a pair of endzone turnovers by the Ravens in the fourth quarter.

San Francisco topped the Detroit Lions 34-31 at home, holding the Lions to seven points in the second half and overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit to reach their first championship since 2019. Star running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 90 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.

Super Bowl LVII takes place Sunday, Feb. 11 (6:30 pm ET, CBS), in Las Vegas, with R&B star Usher headlining the halftime show.

Jam Master Jay Trial Begins

Opening statements begin today in a federal trial for the murder of pioneering hip-hop star Jason Mizell, known to fans as Jam Master Jay, who was shot and killed in 2002 at age 37. The case languished for two decades amid stalled investigations and lack of evidence.

Karl Jordan Jr., 40, and Ronald Washington, 59, were eventually arrested in 2020 on allegations they shot Jay in his Queens studio for reportedly excluding them from plans to sell a shipment of cocaine. Prosecutors allege Jay was involved in drug distribution at the time, claims his family denies. Both men have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Jay was one-third of Run-DMC, viewed as one of the most influential groups in hip-hop history. The trio is credited with transitioning hip-hop away from its disco and funk origins and toward a more aggressive style with sharp lyrics and distinct beats, while popularizing an underground fashion and cultural aesthetic.
