NEED TO KNOWTrump Visits KenoshaPresident Trump is expected to visit Kenosha today, the Wisconsin city rocked by violent protests in the wake of the police shooting of Jacob Blake last Sunday. He is scheduled to tour the damage in the city and meet with police officers. City officials reported at least 175 people have been arrested over the past week, with more than 100 having addresses listed outside the city. That number includes 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, whose lawyer says will claim self-defense in a shooting last Tuesday that left two dead and one injured. Democratic nominee Joe Biden condemned violent protests during remarks in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, a number of recent polls show the presidential race tightening in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Separately, in Portland, Oregon—where a suspect self-identifying as an Antifa supporter is under investigation in the fatal shooting of a counterprotester during Saturday clashes—state police have been called back in to help quell unrest. John Thompson Jr. Dies Legendary college basketball coach John Thompson Jr. passed away at the age of 78, his family announced yesterday. The Hall of Fame coach was best known for elevating Georgetown University basketball to national prominence, becoming the first Black coach to win a NCAA title in 1984. The program had never finished the season ranked before Thompson's arrival. During his three-decade tenure, he had 26 players drafted into the NBA, including Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Allen Iverson, and more. He coached Georgetown to three Final Fours and led the USA men's team in the 1988 Olympics. Thompson was equally well-known for his off-the-court work, using his stature to advocate for players coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, emphasizing the educational opportunities of athletic scholarships. He also famously confronted notorious drug kingpin, Rayful Edmonds, over associating with Georgetown players. A cause of death was not provided. Flynn Case Drags OnAn appeals court panel rejected an effort yesterday by Michael Flynn to dismiss a previously agreed to plea deal, the latest step in the winding, yearslong case against the former national security adviser. Charged as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, Flynn originally pleaded guilty in 2017 to making false statements to the FBI regarding conversations with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before President Trump assumed office (Mueller actually recommended Flynn receive little to no jail time for cooperating). After two years of delayed sentencing—and documents that critics say show the FBI tricked Flynn—the Justice Department dropped the case. A three-judge panel upheld the motion to dismiss, which was subsequently overturned by yesterday's 8-2 decision. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan will now hear arguments over the Department's move to dismiss the case—a request that may still be upheld. Separately, an appeals court rejected a Democrat-led lawsuit to allow a subpoena of former White House lawyer Don McGahn. Enjoy reading? Share 1440 with your three closest friends.
