Johnson Visits Kyiv, Johnny Depp Trial, and Mapping US Poverty

The long-running legal feud between actor Johnny Depp and his wife, actress Amber Heard, continues in a Virginia courtroom.

NEED TO KNOW

Johnson Visits Kyiv

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Saturday during a surprise visit to the capital of Kyiv. Kept under wraps until after Johnson arrived, the UK pledged 120 armored vehicles and antiship missile systems to Ukraine following the visit.

The clandestine trip came a week after Russian forces withdrew from the region, having failed to capture Kyiv. A number of alleged atrocities have been revealed in the wake of their departure—Ukrainian officials say more than 5,600 potential war crimes are being investigated.

Reports suggest Russia has shifted its focus to the east, home to the separatist Donbas region. Western officials suggest a full-scale invasion in the area may begin this week. Over the weekend, Russia appointed Gen. Aleksandr V. Dvornikov to lead the operation, a seasoned commander with experience fighting in Syria, to lead military operations.

Depp Defamation Suit (Part II)

A $50M defamation lawsuit brought by actor Johnny Depp against his former wife Amber Heard begins today in a Virginia court, the latest in a yearslong legal battle following the pair's 2017 divorce. At the center of the case is a 2018 op-ed published by Heard in The Washington Post implying allegations of domestic abuse against Depp (read here).

The couple's relationship began on the set of the 2011 film "The Rum Diary" and quickly became tumultuous (see timeline). Married in 2015, Heard filed for divorce after one year, claiming Depp was abusive. Depp denied the allegations, countering with accusations of domestic violence by Heard. The legal battles have pushed a number of salacious details of the couple's relationship into public view.

Depp previously lost a suit against British tabloid The Sun, which published detailed allegations of abuse provided by Heard to the outlet. The current trial could last six weeks and involve more than 100 witnesses.

Khan Out in Pakistan

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was removed from office over the weekend, after losing a no-confidence vote in the country's parliament. While no prime minister has successfully completed a five-year term in Pakistan's history, the former cricket star becomes the first ousted via a no-confidence vote.

While critics blamed Khan for mismanaging the economy, analysts noted he had lost the support of both Pakistan's powerful military and a smaller coalition party needed to maintain a parliamentary majority. The opposition bloc, now in control of the government, is expected to appoint Shehbaz Sharif, the brother of three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Meanwhile, in France, President Emmanuel Macron and conservative populist challenger Marie Le Pen advanced to an April 24 presidential runoff election, with polls suggesting a tight race over the final two weeks of campaigning.

REST YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF

MUDWTR’s :rest blend is a caffeine-free evening drink made from rooibos chai and adaptogens that support a state of relaxation and calm. It feels like a warm hug from Mom, narrated by Morgan Freeman.

The MUDWTR team dreamed up the :rest evening blend as a protest to hustle culture. It’s a reminder to treat your evening ritual like an athlete warming up for a game. This time is sacred. It’s that sliver of time when you can disconnect from the chaos, reset, and start breathing deeply again. Members of the 1440 team drink :rest every night to calm down and get some—ahem—rest before the rise and bustle of the next day.

How do we drink it? We add a tablespoon to hot water and stir in a little oat milk and honey. But you can add whatever makes for the best ritual: some like a little creamer, some go bulletproof. That's all there is to it. For a limited time, take 20% off your first purchase with code GETREST.
