Computer Caused Lion Air Crash. |
A deadly October plane crash that killed 189 people in Indonesia was caused by a malfunctioning safety system, according to data recovered from the plane's black box. In a report released yesterday, investigators describe the pilots struggling to control the new model Boeing 737 MAX 8 against the plane's computerized safety override. The recovered data shows the plane was pulled out of a nosedive multiple times before crashing into the Java Sea at 450 mph. The conclusion is consistent with the theory that the plane's auto-adjust system, which is designed to force the nose down if its angle is too steep in order to prevent stalls, received bad data about the plane's orientation from faulty sensors attached to the fuselage.
Boeing has delivered (paywall) over 200 of the new MAX model aircraft to airlines around the globe, with 4,700 orders in place. |

Manafort. |
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort allegedly met with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange multiple times between 2013 and 2016 in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London, according to reports yesterday. One meeting was said to have occurred around March 2016, a time period that would've overlapped with the beginning Manafort's involvement with the Trump campaign. WikiLeaks, an international non-profit that publishes secret and leaked info from anonymous sources, obtained a raft of emails from a source who had hacked the computers of Hillary Clinton's campaign during the 2016 presidential election. WikiLeaks released about 20,000 emails obtained from Clinton campaign chief John Podesta between October and November 2016. Manafort currently faces prison time for financial and lobbying crimes uncovered by the ongoing Russia probe (though the charges were unrelated to his time with the Trump campaign). Manafort and Assange both strongly denied the allegations. |

Mexico to House Migrants. |
The Mexican government signaled yesterday it would be willing to house migrants arriving at the US border while they wait for asylum. The change - asylum seekers are currently housed in the US while their cases are adjudicated - was a key demand of President Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy. Trump tweeted that a deal had been reached last Saturday, but incoming Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador denied the reports. The news comes as over 5,000 Central American migrants, part of a caravan arriving from countries like El Salvador and Honduras, are currently housed in a sports complex in the border city of Tijuana.
In Washington, another showdown over border wall funding is ramping up as a Dec. 7th deadline to fund large parts of the federal government looms. |
