Need To Know

New National Monument

President Joe Biden, during a visit to Arizona yesterday, designated nearly a million acres of land just outside of Grand Canyon National Park as a national monument. The Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni, or the Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument, is the fifth such designation during Biden's presidency.

The designation is meant to protect land considered sacred to Native American tribes in the area, including from all new uranium mining for energy use. Native tribes and environmental groups have said such mining activities would damage the Colorado River and nearby tribal sites. Uranium mining has already been restricted in the area since a moratorium went into effect in 2012; however, the restriction is set to expire in 2032. See an overview of how uranium is mined here.

Nearly 3,000 mining leases from 2012 will still be allowed to continue. Roughly 1.3% of known uranium sources in the US are located within the area near the Grand Canyon. About 5% of the country's total uranium sources are domestic, while the rest are imported (see data).

Semaglutide Reduces Heart Risk

Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy was found to significantly reduce the risk of major heart issues, according to a study released yesterday. Analysts suggest the results could help decrease the cost of the new class of semaglutide-based weight-loss drugs—including Ozempic—often labeled as nonmedical treatments by insurers.

The five-year study observed the effects of a weekly injection in over 17,000 obese patients over the age of 45 who have cardiovascular disease, reporting a 20% reduction in heart attacks, strokes, and cardiac arrests. The treatment consists of an appetite-suppressing gut hormone known as semaglutide, which has skyrocketed in popularity since being FDA-approved in 2021. Recent studies repeatedly have shown the drug's efficacy, with recipients seeing a 15% weight reduction

Roughly 40% of US adults are overweight or obese, a major risk factor for heart disease. An estimated one in four deaths results from heart disease each year in the US.

Dark Web Pedophilia Bust

Nearly 100 people have been arrested in the US and Australia as part of a dark web child abuse investigation, including 79 in the US and 19 in Australia, and 13 children have been rescued. The suspects in Australia are between the ages of 32 and 81, with many in careers that require a high degree of IT knowledge.

The news comes more than two years after FBI Special Agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger—who were part of the 2015 takedown of Playpen—were fatally shot as they attempted to serve a search warrant at an apartment in Sunrise, Florida, for a man suspected of being in possession of child abuse material. Dubbed Operation Bakis, the investigation was formally launched last year when the FBI provided Australian authorities with information about a child abuse network on the dark web.

Over 80% of dark web traffic was found to relate to illegal porn, abuse images, or child sex abuse material. See why it’s hard to stop the spread of the material here.

Scientists Discover New Way to Fight Aging

Scientists have discovered a remarkable antiaging molecule called Urolithin A that can give our cellular powerhouses, the mitochondria, new life. This is a potential game-changer for healthy aging. Meet Mitopure® by Timeline Nutrition, the only clinically validated, highly pure Urolithin A supplement.

Did you know that ~90% of the food you eat and the air you breathe is used by your mitochondria to produce your body's energy? By our 30s, our mitochondria can become less efficient, leading to a reduction in energy production. But there's a way to counter this natural decline. When taken daily, Mitopure renews your mitochondria, increasing cellular energy. The results? Studies found participants saw muscle strength and endurance increase without any changes to exercise routines.

Mitopure renews cells to a more powerful state. See for yourself; 1440 readers can try a free 3-day starter pack, while supplies last, with code 1440START.
