Demolition in Surfside 

Crews carried out controlled demolition of the remainder of a collapsed Miami-area condo building Sunday, a decision accelerated by the impending arrival of Tropical Storm Elsa along coastal Florida. The remaining structure represented the west side of the building; the central and east sides both collapsed June 24 (see diagram). Watch the building come down here.

As of this writing, at least 24 people have been confirmed dead. The number unaccounted for dropped to 126 after officials located some missing residents elsewhere and worked out discrepancies in resident lists.

Among the victims, a seven-year-old daughter of a Miami firefighter who was on the scene was recovered Friday. See a list of the lives lost here.

... Speaking of Elsa

The season's first hurricane swept over the Caribbean during the weekend, leaving at least three dead as the system headed toward the US. The fifth named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Elsa briefly reached hurricane status before being downgraded; meteorologists say it may intensify as it moves over the warm water between Cuba and the southern tip of Florida. As of this writing, the storm was moving at roughly 12 miles per hour, about 60 miles south of the US.

The storm is expected to make landfall along the west side of Florida, bending around the Miami area. Despite missing the brunt of the system, Elsa is expected to bring high winds and rain to the recovery effort in Surfside.

Suns Versus Bucks

The Phoenix Suns will face the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA finals after Milwaukee bested the Atlanta Hawks during Game 6 Saturday, 118-107. The Suns closed out the Los Angeles Clippers Wednesday, winning the series 4-2. It marks the first time since 2010 the Finals will not feature LeBron James or the Golden State Warriors. 

The Suns (51-21 in the regular season) return to the Finals for the first time since 1993, led by rising star Devin Booker and future Hall-of-Fame point guard Chris Paul. It's the first time Paul, an 11-time All-Star, has made the championship. The Bucks, led by superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, end a long drought, having last made the finals in 1974. Milwaukee leaned on supporting players in Games 5 and 6 against Atlanta, with Antetokounmpo out with a hyperextended knee (he is day-to-day for the Finals).
