Chaos in Caracas. |
Venezuela is bracing for a second day of violence following a call by opposition leader Juan Guaido for a "final push" to oust President Nicolas Maduro. It was the boldest move yet Guaido, who declared himself interim president in January and has been formally recognized by over 50 countries, including the United States. The ongoing question has been whether the country's military will continue to support Maduro - yesterday morning Guaido appeared to take over a military base in the capital of Caracas with the help of some rank-and-file military forces, but top military brass so far have remained loyal to Maduro. Maduro, who has overseen a plummeting economy and been widely criticized for human rights abuses, has also received support from Russia and China. Over 100 people were injured as protesters took to the streets to support Guaido, including when an armored car plowed into a group of demonstrators (see video).

Infrastructure Deal on the Horizon. |
President Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D, CA-12), and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly agreed to the broad outline of a nearly $2T infrastructure deal after meeting yesterday. Legislative details are expected to be hashed out over the coming months, with the biggest obstacle being how to foot the bill - nevertheless, the agreement represents a large step forward, with both sides agreeing to meet in three weeks to discuss funding. Infrastructure projects encompass a range of public works, including highways, dams, railways, airports, water systems and more. Many have argued that infrastructure investment drives economic activity, with a recent report estimating that a $737B, 10-year investment could generate almost $6T in new economic activity over 20 years.

New Sun Rises in Japan. |
Japan's Emperor Akihito officially abdicated his throne yesterday, formally handing the position over to his eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, as the clock struck midnight. Akihito is the first monarch to voluntarily leave the Chrysanthemum Throne in over 200 years after citing health concerns, and the rise of his son kicks off a new era - named Reiwa, meaning order and harmony - in the unique Japanese era calendar. Naruhito will be the nation’s 126th emperor, a symbolic position similar to the British royal family that acts as the head of state. Though limited in actual power, Akihito endeared himself to the public for being more in touch with the general population than his predecessors.
The family is running low on male heirs - a mysterious pair of knives (paywall) left on the desk of the second-in-line heir, a 12-year-old schoolboy, sparked safety concerns over the weekend. |
