San Diego Synagogue Shooting. |
One person is dead and three others injured after a gunman stormed a synagogue in Poway, California. Officials are investigating the attack as a hate crime - the shooter, who was taken into custody, reportedly yelled anti-Semitic slurs and screamed that Jews were "running the world" before opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle. The victim who was killed, 60-year-old Lori Kaye, was shot as she reportedly jumped in between the shooter and Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein. The shooting is the latest in a string of attacks on houses of worship around the globe, including the devastating Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka that killed 253 people, a March rampage at two mosques in New Zealand that killed 50, and a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue last October that killed 11, among other attacks.
According to Goldstein, who wrapped his hands in a prayer shawl and addressed his congregation as the shooter fled, said the gun miraculously jammed seconds after the shooting started. |

New York Church Names Abusers. |
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York identified 115 clergy that had been accused of sexual abuse over the weekend. It was one of the largest releases of its kind by the Church, and comes as the attorneys general in New York and New Jersey have initiated inquiries into clergy sex abuse. The list includes 53 men deemed to have been credibly accused and 58 others whose cases the Church said did not meet the bar of "credible accusation" (paywall), but whose victims were entitled to compensation (none are still active in the church). The New York diocese, one of the most prominent in the US, had been criticized for remaining silent as churches around the country released similar lists. The move is part of an effort by the Church to reconcile with its members and the public after a damning grand jury report last August found that nearly 300 priests had abused over 1,000 children over decades in Pennsylvania.

Endgame Smashes Records. |
Disney announced yesterday that global box office sales for Avengers: Endgame passed $1.2B, making it the biggest worldwide opening for a film of all-time. The haul nearly doubled the previous record - set last year by its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War - of $640M, and the film also broke the domestic opening weekend box office record, with $350M. The movie, the fourth Avengers film, is part of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe, a meta-franchise that explored an interconnected storyline known as the "Infinity Saga" through 22 films released over the past decade. Endgame's stellar opening weekend puts the total gross of the for the Infinity Saga to just under $20B (see ticket sales by film). The Disney-owned Marvel Studios announced the launch of a new story line that will play out over a 5-year slate of films, ditching iconic characters like Iron Man and Captain America in favor of newer heroes from the Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and heavily-acclaimed Black Panther films.
