Trump Acquitted |
The Senate voted to acquit President Trump on charges of abusing his power and obstructing Congress yesterday, bringing to an end the third impeachment trial in US history. The outcome was widely anticipated with the only question being which, if any, party members would break ranks, particularly swing-state candidates facing tight 2020 races like Sens. Doug Jones (D-AL) and Cory Gardner (R-CO). Ultimately the lone dissenter was Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), who voted to convict the president on the abuse of power charge following an impassioned floor speech (watch here), but voted to acquit on charges of obstruction. The vote makes Romney the first senator in any of the three impeachment trials - including Bill Clinton in 1999 and Andrew Johnson in 1868 - to vote against a president who was a member of the same party.
The trial ended on a bipartisan note, with applause for Chief Justice John Roberts who presided over the hearings. |

Tesla's Wild Ride |
Shares of electric carmaker Tesla dropped 17% yesterday following news that vehicle deliveries slated for February would be delayed as its Shanghai factory remains closed in the face of China's coronavirus outbreak. It was the stock's biggest drop since November 2013 and followed a meteoric 45% rise since Jan. 30. Analysts believe the previous spike was largely driven by fear of missing out on the company as it positioned itself as the global leader in a burgeoning electric vehicle market that saw 60% growth between 2018 and 2019. Even with the drop, the company is valued at more than $130B, compared to General Motors' $50B and Ford's $33B. The plunge was not mirrored by broader markets, who shrugged off fears of extended impact from the new virus; the Dow Jones rose 1.7%, the S&P 500 was up 1.1%, and the Nasdaq rose 0.4%. |

Turkey Sends Militants to Libya |
Militants previously affiliated with groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda have been deployed by Turkey to fight in Libya on behalf of the United Nations-backed government, sources said yesterday. The news is the latest twist in the messy and prolonged civil war that broke out in the aftermath of the ouster of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The current fighting broke out following a 2014 parliamentary election that saw 18% voter turnout and pushed Islamist factions from power (see 101). Since then, almost 9,000 people have been killed and more than 250,000 people displaced, with the formal government facing an insurgent campaign by the Libyan National Army. The war-torn country has become a proxy battleground for a larger power struggle in the region, with Turkey backing the government and Russia covertly backing the LNA. The rest of the international community has called for peace talks, an effort that has yielded minimal success so far.
Editor's Note: Yesterday we mistakenly referred to the medal awarded by President Trump to Rush Limbaugh as the Medal of Honor, which is the nation's highest military honor (see history). In fact, Limbaugh was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a civilian honor. Thanks to readers for pointing out the error! |
