North Korea Launches Another Ballistic Missile.
North Korea fired another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Tuesday, its first since September when it also conducted its sixth underground nuclear test. US officials said this test went higher than any previous test - ICBMs need to be sent high, usually into outer space (see 101) - travelling nearly 2,800 miles upwards, or more than 10 times higher than the International Space Station. By distance, it traveled nearly 620 miles to the east before falling into the Sea of Japan. The launch came on the same day as a South Korean official said the North may be able to pair a nuclear warhead and an ICBM - allowing the country to threaten the US with a nuclear strike - by as early as next year

SCOTUS Hears Landmark Digital Privacy Case Today.
The Supreme Court will hear a case with wide-ranging implications for digital privacy today. The case, Carpenter v. United States, began when police used cellphone records to retrace the movements of a suspect accused of armed robbery in 2010. The cellphone data was obtained from the phone companies without warrant, which experts say may be a violation of the defendant's fourth amendment rights. A central question in the case is whether the 'third party doctrine' - which says police can obtain information from suspects voluntarily shared with a third party, like bank records - applies in the digital age, where cellphones and other devices continuously record a staggering amount of information. A decision is expected in mid-2018.

2018 Grammy Nominations Announced.

The Recording Academy released its nominations for the 60th annual Grammy Awards yesterday, and Jay-Z leads the pack with 8 total nominations, followed by Kendrick Lamar (7) and Bruno Mars (6). All three are contenders for Album of the Year - with attention on Lamar's widely-lauded DAMN - along with Childish Gambino's Awaken, My Love! and Bruno Mars' 24K Magic (see full nomination list). Voters took notice of streaming music numbers, with the most prestigious categories dominated by streaming hits - Despacito, up for both Song and Record of the Year, had 4 billion views on YouTube, while Childish Gambino's Redbone had 338 million streams on Spotify (see biggest snubs). And finally, while he didn't make it out of the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders may get a consolation prize in a Grammy in the Spoken Word category for his audio book A Future to Believe In. The awards will be held on January 28th, 2018.
