Rosenstein to Step Down. |
US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is planning to step down from his position within the next few weeks, according to multiple reports yesterday. Sources differed on the timing - some outlets said Rosenstein was waiting for William Barr, the nominee to replace Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, to be confirmed, while others indicated he would step down when Special Counsel Robert Mueller submitted his report on alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election. As the second in command at the Justice Department, Rosenstein has overseen the Mueller probe - often drawing the ire of President Trump - following Sessions' recusal from the case. Barr will assume oversight of the Mueller probe if confirmed by the Senate, though the timing may be delayed as the new congress settles in. |

Brexit Brinkmanship. |
Debate over embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for the United Kingdom to exit the European Union began again yesterday, with Parliament trying to wrest control of the exit plan away from May. A 2016 national referendum required the UK to divorce the EU, and May has spent the last two years negotiating a complex package governing how the exit would proceed (see Brexit 101). The package was signed off by EU leaders but has fallen victim to a fractured Parliament. May has refused to consider an alternative, choosing instead to try to shore up support for the existing bill after delaying a December vote to consensus. The UK is scheduled to legally cut ties with the EU on March 29th, 2019, with or without a deal.
Here is what may happen if the deal is not approved. |

Congo Elects Surprise Winner. |
Chaos reigned in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi was declared the winner of a December 30th presidential election. In naming Tshisekedi the victor election officials brushed aside independent assessments saying that a second opposition candidate, Martin Fayulu, had actually won the vote. Officials were also criticized for attempting to delay the vote in three opposition areas ostensibly due to an ongoing Ebola outbreak - the decision to delay the vote sparked protests and ultimately led to an attack on an Ebola treatment center. While Fayulu is expected to contest the vote, either candidate would take over for outgoing president Joseph Kabila, who suffered a massive defeat after holding power for nearly 18 years. |
